Acetyl L-Carnitine - Burn Fat not Muscle!

One of the questions we get asked most from our Burners out there is what is this ALCAR, or Acetyl-L-Carnitine, that we're always hearing about in relation to fat loss? I just wanted to put together a quick two minute video explaining what it is, what it does, how it tastes and how you use it.

So it's pretty easy to explain what it is. It's just simply an amino acid. The ProClinical Laboratories ProALCAR is a powder form and is 100 percent pharmaceutical grade and, like I said, just an amino acid.

What it actually does is it targets fat for fuel and that's why we're always hearing about it for fat loss and it's used in a lot of fat loss products. I like to explain it using a diagram, it's sort of easy to visualise.

The human body is made up of cells and we have to fuel those cells. This is where carnitine comes in for targeting fat for that fuel. So, that's a cell and the engine room is the mitochondria. The fat molecule that's floating around in our blood stream goes to be used by the cell and goes to get in via the mitochondria, but is actually rejected, unless it is attached to a carnitine molecule. You ingest carnitine, it actually finds a fat cell in the bloodstream and when it goes to be used by the mitochondria for energy, it lets it in and that allows the cell to burn fat for fuel. When you put carnitine in your system, in essence, you're targeting fat for fuel.

It tastes quite sour in the acetyl version, which is the most popular version. I personally like sour stuff, so I quite enjoy it, however some people don't like it, so therefore it's really good to mix in your thermogenic fat burner. The reason we want to do that, in particular, is that this product here, or other thermogenics out there, will increase your calorie burn. If you're burning more calories, carnitine is making sure that those calories are coming from body fat.

The other time you want to take carnitine is before any physical activity. Again, physical activity, you're burning more calories and the carnitine is making sure those calories come from fat. So anytime that you're boosting your metabolic rate through a thermogenic fat burner or training, you want to introduce carnitine into your system.

Like I always say, with any fat loss process, you need to make sure that you're really well hydrated. So if you're using carnitine to make sure that chemical process occurs effectively, make sure that, if you're a female, you're drinking at least 2.5 to 2.7 litres of water a day, plus more wile you're exercising, and for a male, it's 3.5 to 3.7 litres of water per day, to make the most of that fat loss result.
